Stages of Bariatric Surgery

*Everyone will experience different results after surgery. Consult with your doctor before beginning any meal plan following weight loss surgery.

STAGE 1

1 Week On Diet Clear Liquids

You will be on a Phase One diet the day of surgery

Phase One consists of sugar-free clear liquids and Jell-O, water and broths

No sugar, caffeine, or carbonated beverages should be consumed during Phase One or Phase Two of the diet

STAGE 2

2 Week On Diet Pureed Foods

Once Phase One is tolerated without any difficulty, you will be advanced to Phase Two

Phase Two consists of pureed or fully blenderized food and thicker liquids (no chunks or solid material)

STAGE 3

3 Week On Diet Soft Foods

You should only advance to beyond a Phase Two diet after receiving instructions and permission from your doctor (usually 4 weeks)

Meals should be composed of 75 percent protein and minimal amounts of carbohydrates and fats

STAGE 4

4 Week On Diet Solid Foods

After about 12 weeks you will advance to the final stage.

Only three to four meals per day. Eat until you begin to feel full or have eaten a cup of food and then stop.

Do not eat anything solid/blenderized/soft again until your next meal time.

FAQ

When following the guidelines of this meal plan, you will consume 90g of protein throughout the day on the products we provide alone. The minimum protein per day intake is around 60g, but it is better to be around the 100g range. The more active you are the more likely it is you will benefit from protein supplements in your diet. If you are unsure about how much protein you should be eating, check with your dietitian and personal trainer.

Yes! This plan comes with a Bariatric Diet Guide that will walk you through the foods we provide and how to use them during Phase 2 of your post-op diet. The guide also has helpful interactive pages such as food and exercise logs, exercise recommendations, and more!

Bariatric patients should be cautious not to drink protein shakes and smoothies too quickly. When it comes to protein drinks it is especially easy to overfill the stomach pouch. To avoid filling up too quickly, stick to the recommended 125ml servings for first 12 weeks after your operation, before increasing your intake up to 250ml serving. (Never drink more than 1 x 250ml serving at a time). Try to avoid always mixing your protein powder with milk and use water instead.

It is recommended that you meet with a Nutritionist while on this plan so you can discuss your progress and get answers to any questions you may have.

Begin adding very small portions of puréed and soft foods as tolerated. Take very small bites and chew everything very well. Do not take more than two bites every 20 minutes when adding a new food.

Recommended puréed and soft foods:

  • Applesauce
  • Yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Well-cooked, puréed vegetables
  • Hot cereals
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Scrambled egg whites or egg substitute
  • Canned fruits
  • Canned tuna fish
  • Lean fish
  • Tofu
  • Lean ground meats or poultry

Avoid all bread and meats that are not easily chewed.

Days 0 to 14 will be a liquid diet, followed by pureed foods on days 15 to 30. This will allow for adequate healing. Consult with your medical healthcare professional.

Milk contains lactose (which is not easily digested). Depending on your individual tolerance, even a tiny amount of milk can cause gas, cramps and even diarrhea.

Snacking, nibbling, or grazing on foods, typically high-calorie and high-fat foods, can add a lot of calories a day to your food intake, defeating the purpose of your operation. Snacking will slow down your weight-loss and can quickly lead to weight gain.

You need to be very careful, and it’s recommended that you avoid eating red meat for the first several months. Red meats contain high levels of meat fibers which hold the piece of meat together, preventing you from separating it into small parts when you chew. This can plug the outlet of your stomach pouch and prevent anything from passing through, a condition that is very uncomfortable.

Strive to have 100 grams of protein per day. Check with your medical professional to determine the right amount for your type of surgery.

After the initial six months following weight loss surgery, most patients are able to enjoy spices.

Most surgeons require patients to consult with a nutritionist before surgery. After weight loss surgery, one of our in-house nutritionists can assist you with healthy food selections.

"For the price, you can't beat this plan. I have tried other meal plan programs in the past that are so expensive - but they are the same products! I have saved thousands since switching to Doctors Weight Loss."
